Kollam to Alleppey, Kerala : Rather than take a bus, we chose the scenic boat trip to take us through the Kerala backwaters from Kollam to Alleppey. To get from Varkala to Kollam we took our hotel's taxi; an Ambassador which have remained relatively unchanged since inception in 1957. During the boat trip was saw lots of houseboats, which we had hoped to charter for a night from Alleppey, but the price was prohibitive.

Munnar, Kerala : Like Varkala and Panjim, Munnar was a big highlight of our trip. The hills here at 5,000 ft were cool and the scenery picturesque; tea plantantions filled every valley and hillside. We went on an early morning sunrise trek to the top of southern India's highest mountain, Anamudi (8,822 feet). We also spent a peaceful New Years here.
